UFC 289: Amanda Nunes
On one of her biggest evenings ever, Amanda Nunes performed flawlessly twice.
First, she put on an almost faultless performance against Irene Aldana on Saturday in the main event of UFC 289 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, defending her bantamweight title. She won by scores of 50-44 twice and 50-43, while also breaking the bantamweight takedown record.
When she was finished, she declared her retirement, ending her career as the best female MMA fighter of all time as well as the women’s bantamweight and featherweight champions. She placed both of her titles in the middle of the Octagon before retiring from fighting as is customary in MMA. She cut her gloves and set them on the ground.
Amanda Nunes kissed her belts while on her knees and then lowered her head to the ground.
She was ecstatic when she stood up, and after giving a happy post-fight interview to Daniel Cormier, she jumped about the Octagon taking pictures, pouring beer on herself and other people, and just enjoying one of the finest careers ever.
Nunes remarked, “Tonight is the perfect time to retire,” as the Rogers Arena crowd sighed.
She performed beautifully, superior to Aldana in every way. Aldana didn’t do much in the opening round other than miss a sharp counter right hand, but a far better opponent beat and hammered her.
According to Nunes, she has been fighting for so long that her mother has questioned when she will put them to rest.
Amanda Nunes said, “She can’t take any more.”
Nunes established a bar that will be difficult to surpass. Valentina Shevchenko, who held a UFC belt twice, Cris “Cyborg” Justino, Julianna Pea, Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Germaine de Randamie, and Holly Holm were among the seven female UFC champions she defeated.
She not only owned two belts, she also stood up for both of them.
She has not only defeated the female competitors but also established herself as one of the best fighters overall. Only a few men have achieved as much as she did.
Aldana simply lacked the necessary skills, but she wasn’t the only one. Nunes was untouchable when she was at her best.
And nobody will be in her class for a very long time.
